The Siena Summer Studio is NJSOA's premiere study abroad program. In 1993, NJIT signed an agreement of scientific and academic cooperation with the University of Siena in Italy to promote student exchange between the two universities. The focus of this program is the Siena summer study program through which 30 NJSOA students, graduate and undergraduate, spend for weeks in Siena as part of a 12-week program dedicated to the study of art and architectural history and urban development.
The students spend six weeks in Newark learning analytical techniques and studying Italian language and culture prior to embarking for Italy, where a two-week stay in Rome and Naples precedes the intensive Siena residency. Students may register for up to 12 credits in design studio, history, and advanced graphics. For many students, this is their first trip outside of the United States, and the value of the experience in introducing them to world culture is inestimable. In exchange, NJIT is host each year to one or more students from the University of Siena (not necessarily in architecture) to continue their studies in Newark. The instruction in Siena is by NJSOA faculty who rotate in two-week stays with coordination by one full-time faculty member. Students pay tuition to NJIT and a fee to cover travel costs including air fare, accommodations, bus tours and admissions.
