Info for Incoming Students

Architecture

First-year Requirements

Students entering the architecture program will be assigned a specific studio section and space on the first day of class. You will receive a studio schedule, critic assignment and location information at that time. Do NOT bring your computer, supplies, or any material with you on the first day! You will have an opportunity to set up your equipment after you've been assigned a studio space.

Incoming first-year students are expected to have completed their summer reading assignment prior to the start of the semester: Donald Norman's The Design of Everyday Things and Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities. In addition, you will be expected to bring a basic toolkit of traditional architectural supplies.

Architecture Computer Requirements

All students entering Introduction to Architecture (ARCH 163 and ARCH 163H) must purchase the specified architecture computer in order to have access to the NJSOA network and the software available. Your computer will be secured in your assigned studio for the duration of the semester. Only students assigned to a particular studio will have access to that space. Please use the NJIT/Dell premier portal (or located at the bottom of the FAQ link below) to purchase the exact computer needed for imaging. Make sure you purchase the "Recommended Bundle" designated for Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Digital Design and Fine Arts.

If you purchase your computer by August 1, you should expect delivery to your home in time to bring to school for classes. Do NOT have your computer shipped to the School; we do not have the capacity to track nor guarantee the safe delivery and storage of your equipment. And again, do NOT bring your computer to the School until AFTER you are assigned a studio space.

Art + Design

First-year Requirements

First year students enrolled in the Art+Design programs are not required to purchase their own computers for their first year of study at NJIT. This includes Industrial Design, Fine Arts, Digital Design and Interior Design. Because these majors share a common foundation year, the design work takes place in Foundation Laboratories housed in Weston Hall. These computers will be available to complete your design work; however, they are shared among a limited number of students enrolled in particular courses within the School of Art+Design. Only students enrolled in courses taught in those labs will have access to the labs' computers. There are also a number of NJIT computer laboratories accessible on campus and several computers available in the Littman Architecture Library (during posted library hours) in which you can complete coursework outside of the design studios and labs.

While digital design work will take place in the School's dedicated Foundation Laboratories, Art+Design students will be exposed to and expected to work in both digital and traditional media. Students are required to purchase their own tools and supplies.

Art + Design Computer Requirements

Art+Design students entering a studio course (ID 263, INT 263, FA 263, or DD 363) must purchase the same studio computer required for Architecture in order to access the NJSOA network and the software available. The studio computer specifications are updated and released each summer prior to the Fall studio. (see Architecture Studio Computer Specifications and Additional Equipment Requirements & Recommendations above for more information)

As with Architecture, you will be assigned a studio location in which your computer will be secured or the duration of the semester. Only students assigned to a particular studio will have access to that space. Do NOT bring your computer, supplies, or any material with you on the first day! You will have an opportunity to set up your equipment after you've been assigned a studio space.

Because each major will enter studio at a different point in their curriculum, please ensure you purchase the Architecture studio computer with the most recently updated specifications for the appropriate Fall semester:

  • Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Fine Arts students must purchase the studio computer for 2nd Year Studio.
  • Digital Design students must purchase the studio computer for 3rd year studio. (First and second year Digital Design courses will be conducted in specialized Digital Media Laboratories.)
