In high performance buildings, energy efficient design begins with a methodical reduction of the building’s heating and cooling loads – those imposed by climate and those generated by people, lights, and equipment. With all loads minimized, mechanical systems can then be selected based on highest output for lowest fuel consumption.
Computer software that will predict energy costs for a proposed building design will be introduced. This energy software, essential in the analysis of energy efficiency measures, facilitates informed decision making through the course of the design process.
Renewable energy technologies reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and help alleviate carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions The technologies of passive solar design and building integrated photovoltaics will be discussed highlighted.
