Design/Build Masonry Studio

The Design/Build Studio has become a highlight of the NJSOA experience for our undergraduate students. This program consists of specialized courses designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to build fragments of student designs.

Second-year students work in teams consisting of studio sections to produce presentation boards, multimedia presentations and full-scale mock-ups of a portion of the team design project. The culmination of this studio effort is the Design/Build Competition.

Sponsored by the Masonry Contractors of New Jersey in cooperation with the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers NJ Local nos. 2, 4 and 5, and the International Masonry Institute, the Design/Build Competition brings students together with a group of skilled masons to realize their designs in full-scale mock-ups. (see Second Year studio galleries.)

In addition to receiving individual grades, student teams compete with one another for cash awards that further encourage individual team members to come together as part of an effective collective effort. These built designs line the walkway leading to the entrance of the School of Architecture.
