FACULTY
and STAFF
School
of Architecture faculty come from fields of practice and experience
in architectural education and research. They apply their expertise
in design, planning, technology, history, and practice in a direct
and personal way with the student -- both in studio and in core
academic courses. Faculty have won extensive design awards on the
local, state and national levels and their publications, in the
form of books, articles and research reports, are internationally
recognized. They bring their expertise to the studio and classroom
to build the student's skills, knowledge, character and professional
prospects.
WESTON
HALL - SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
Opened in 1998 and designed
by the Hillier Group, the expanded and renovated Weston Hall is
home to the New Jersey School of Architecture at NJIT. With the
exception of the residence halls, it is the only building on campus
used regularly 24 hours per day.

LITTMAN
LIBRARY
Occupying 6,155
square feet on the fourth floor of Weston Hall, the Barbara and
Leonard Littman Library is the information center and circulating
library for students and faculty at the New Jersey School of Architecture.
It contains more than 13,000 books and 78,000 slides as well as
videos and CD-ROMs, and also serves as the lending center for presentation
laptops, digital projectors, and digital cameras. Utilizing a number
of computer workstations connected to the NJSOA network for Internet
and library research, CD recording, 35mm slide scanning, and 12"
x 17" flatbed scanning facilities are available to students
during regular library hours.
ARCHITECTURE
STUDENT UNION
The Architecture Student
Union (asu) is a student-run organization established to serve the
student body of the New Jersey School of Architecture (NJSOA) and
general university population at the New Jersey Institute of Technology
(NJIT) by using
research, site visits and cultural programming to enhance and promote
the students' understanding of changing technologies within our
discipline of architecture as well as those of our engineering associates.
The asu also provides
a technical and conceptual forum for student participation outside
the formal university environment. The asu endeavors to provide
services and address concerns that are deemed necessary by the student
body, for the student body.
CAREER
DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
Provided as a service
to all students, the Career Development Services coordinates cooperative
education, on-campus recruiting, career fairs, and career development
workshops. Assistant Director Sharon
Gilbert is the liaison working with students from the New Jersey
School of Architecture. Career Development services is located in
Campbell Hall next to the School of Architecture and may be reached
by phone (973-596-3100) or fax (973-596-6364).
PHOTO LAB
Located on the first
floor of the School of Architecture (near the elevators), the lab
has a variety of equipment available to students and is the location
where the architectural photography class is held.
COMPUTING
RESOURCES and IMAGING LAB
A long-time leader in
CAD/graphics integration into the architectural curriculum, NJIT
places a premium on computer use in all professions across the curriculum.
All desks in the design studio have high-speed Internet connections
and direct access to the School of Architecture network which gives
them use of a variety software applications relevant to their program.
Software is available for raster/bit-mapped painting, image processing,
compositing, presentation, drafting and technical illustration,
three-dimensional modeling, rendering, and animation (including
access to nonlinear editing software and equipment). Printing (black
and white and color, small format and large format) and scanning
facilities (12" x 17" and 35mm slides) are available in
addition to CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD-RAM devices.
Established on an experimental
basis as CAD/graphics studios in 1985, the Imaging Laboratory became
a formal entity at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1991.
It is a decentralized facility that contains CAD/graphics equipment
for exclusive use within the School of Architecture. The Imaging
Laboratory manages the NJSOA network and print room facilities,
and works with the more than 800 computer users at the school. The
Laboratory has consistently focused on the integration of evolving
computer graphics technologies into the most universal component
of architectural education: the design studio. The Imaging Laboratory
tests and evaluates software and receives corporate support. The
connection between the Imaging Laboratory and the computer industry
provides students with an opportunity to be exposed to new and developing
software. It also provides facilities to MSAS students concentrating
in CAD/graphics as a research, thesis-based degree.
PRINT
ROOM
The NJSOA print facility is located in Weston Hall room 561 and
is staffed by student volunteers. Services provided include color
printing (Hewlett Packard 1220C inkjet and Xerox/Tektronix Phaser
780 laser), large-format plotting (Hewlett Packard 1050 CM+), and
image scanning. Standard black & white laser printing (Hewlett
Packard 5000N) for all undergraduate architecture students is centralized
in this facility. Please visit the NJSOA print facility for additional
information and for hours of operation.
Students or faculty who wish to use the Print Room services MUST
have an NJSOA computer account.
MODEL SHOP
The Model Shop provides
facilities for students to create physical models of student work.
It's hours vary, generally increasing at the end of the semester
to provide students opportunities to work late on their projects.
The shop includes a variety of traditional woodworking equipment
as well as a 50-watt laser cutter connected to the School of Architecture
network to give students the opportunity to bridge the gap between
the virtual and physical, as AutoCAD and Corel files can be transferred
directly when creating detailed models in wood, cardboard, or Plexiglas.
URBAN LAB
The Urban Lab brings
together faculty and students who share an interest in the urban
dimension of contemporary architecture and planning problems and
who recognize the importance of local community participation in
their resolution. The major concern is improving the quality of
life in urban communities through architectural, urban design, and
infrastructure planning interventions. The Lab serves as a sponsor
for community-based studio projects that address specific urban
problems and conditions currently faced.
SCHOLARSHIPS
AND AWARDS
The New Jersey School
of Architecture presents approximately twenty merit awards annually
(for students with, and without, demonstrated financial need) for
a variety of categories including overall design excellence, use
of digital imaging in design, service to the NJSOA community, integration
of contruction and engineering in design, leadership, academic performance,
and so on.
MASONRY
DAY
Sponsored annually by
the International Masonry Institute along with the New Jersey School
of Architecture, Masonry Day provides Architecture and Civil Engineering
students at NJIT hands-on exposure to the craft of masonry construction.
Laying block and installing plaster or terrazzo are among the exhibits
and activities in addition to a series of seminars, culminating
in a game of "Masonry Jeopardy" between the architecture
and engineering students.
PROFESSIONAL
ADVISORY BOARD
The purpose of the Professional
Advisory Board is to help set the direction for the future of the
school and contains a broad representation from the design and construction
industries that extend well beyond the traditional boundaries of
the architectural profession. The New Jersey School of Architecture
uses this Board, consisting of CEOs or Partners in their respective
firms, to gain an independent perspective on new ideas and proposals.
